To save your time and ours, we suggest you take a look at The Sun before submitting. We’ve provided some samples below.

“I’m looking for a writer who doesn’t know where her sentence is leading her; a writer who starts with her obsessions and whose heart is bursting with love; a writer sly enough to give the slip to her secret police, the ones with the power to condemn in the blink of an eye. It’s all right that she doesn’t know what she’s thinking until she writes it, as if the words already exist somewhere and draw her to them. She may not know how she got there, but she knows when she’s arrived.” — Sy Safransky Editor and Publisher of The Sun

Writing from The Sun has won the Pushcart Prize and been selected for the Best American Essays and Best American Short Stories anthologies.

We publish nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. We tend to favor personal writing, but we’re also looking for provocative pieces on political and cultural issues.

We encourage submissions from writers of color.

Surprise us; we often don’t know what we’ll like until we read it.

We rarely run anything longer than seven thousand words; there’s no minimum length.

We discourage simultaneous submissions.

Writing is a solitary act, but when what you’ve written goes out to our loyal subscribers, it can feel a little less so.

What We Pay

Fiction: $300 to $2,000

Poetry: $100 to $250

Hostelling International Canada – Love writing and travelling? We’re looking for travel hostelling international canadastories that go beyond a diary entry and give our readers the inspiration to go explore the world. We love the kind of stories that reveal a little bit about you and where you’ve been at the same time. Great travel stories do more than just recap where you went and what you did, they get into some reflection on what it all means. We’re especially interested in those elements of hostelling and budget travel that make travel so great — meeting people, getting outside of your comfort zone, learning something about yourself or how the world works, making lifelong memories or just figuring out how to pack a backpack. We’re always on the lookout for humour and brilliant insight! We run five types of articles:

TRAVEL STORIES

First-person narrative travel stories that express an overarching message or lesson learned. These aren’t trip recaps, they’re a slice of life away from home that gives a glimpse into what it all means.

LISTS

Offbeat roundups or listicles, with at least five items. These are heavily focused on travelling in Canada and/or hostel life. Rather than lists of places to go or things to do, lists are more about sharing reasons why, new ways of doing things and funny ‘truths.’

OPINION PIECES

A first-person think piece that expresses a clear point of view. Rather than playing it safe by appealing to all opinions, this one takes a stance and argues in support of it. The tone is opinionated and confident but not dismissive, arrogant or inconsiderate.

TIPS

How-tos and travel hacks from those who have been there and done that. These appeal to backpackers and hostellers who want to do more, meet people, see the sights and save money.

GUIDES

Narrowly focused around a particular angle, our guides give backpacker-focused tips for experiencing a particular slice of the world. Following the “A _____’s guide to ________ in _______” format.

Spoilers, please!

Send us a note with a detailed pitch to magazine@hihostels.ca—tell us what your story is about, what readers can take away from it, what kind of photos or video you can provide and a bit about you and where else your work has appeared (including links). And we’re not like the rest of the internet: we love spoilers! If you’re pitching a travel story, tell us what happens or what the takeaway is at the crux of your story—without that it’s hard for our editors to get a sense of how great your story might be. Please let us know about the availability of photos (minimum 2000px wide) or video.

Unfortunately, we can’t accept stories that have appeared elsewhere online or in print. If you have an idea that may come from a trip you haven’t taken yet, feel free to let us know but we won’t commission a story until the trip is complete and you have a better idea of what you can provide.

Payment varies but does exist. While we strive to respond to everyone, if you don’t hear from us in four weeks, feel free to pitch your story idea elsewhere or send us another idea.

Calls for Submissions

CARINA PRESS – The Dirty Bits from Carina Press are “micro-romances,” designed to beCarina Press The-DirtyBits read in an hour or two. Quick and dirty, just the way we like it. These sex-filled stories are guaranteed to pack a punch and deliver a happily ever.

We’re looking for two specific things for The Dirty Bits in the second half of 2018: LGBTQ inclusivity and tropes galore. And yes, the two can overlap!

Call #1: We’d like to see superhot erotic shorts (10,000-25,000 words) featuring gay, lesbian, non-binary, bisexual, and transgender heroes and heroines. Ménage and polyamorous romances are welcome, as are orgy scenarios, but there must be an HEA or HFN for the main characters. Remember, while these are meant to be hot, hot, hot, they’re also meant to be romances, so don’t leave out the romantic arc!

Call #2: Our editors are seeking erotic content, in both LGBTQ and heterosexual romance, that centers specifically around one of the tropes below:

  • Forced Proximity
  • Mature main characters
  • Virgin main characters
  • Voyeurism
  • Sex with a stranger
  • Best friend’s younger sibling
  • Fated mates (bring on the paranormal sexy times!)
  • May/December romance
  • Holidays (think sweet and cute, perhaps with a lot of baking…but also very dirty)
  • Boss/employee
  • Mistaken identity
  • Forced seduction
  • Exotic locations (the more luxurious, the better!)
  • Suspense/ hero(es) or heroine(s) in peril
  • Friends to lovers
  • Enemies to lovers
  • Betting or gambling; a wager between love interests
  • Alaska-set
  • Rags to riches
  • Love interests from different sides of the tracks
  • Single dad (DILF)
  • Small town

The details:

This is an open-ended call, meaning we are interested in seeing submissions in these two areas on an ongoing basis, so there’s no end date/closing date.

The Dirty Bits from Carina Press can be contemporary, paranormal, romantic suspense, historical, science fiction or fantasy romances. They should deliver a fast story—one that transports readers from the stresses of everyday life, work and politics for an hour or two.

We’d like to emphasize that we have two main requirements for the story content of these micro-romances: they need to contain a romance, with a HEA or HFN, and as they are intended to be erotic romances: the sex and sexual tension should be woven into the romance and a key focus of the stories. The pacing must be tight from page one. Stories with minimal sexual tension, minimal on-page sex, long periods of narrative setup, infodumps, and extraneous character interaction are not the right fit for this particular line.
